At the time of the American Revolution, there were 16,000 slaves in the region.  Massachusetts and Rhode Island became great slave trading colonies, while Connecticut was the leading New England slave colony. 

 




Hagar, a woman enslaved and the property of Patriot Silas Deane of Wethersfield, Connecticut is an invisible person historicaly, because of her caste.  On the other hand, she illuminates some significant historical moments as she unravels the lives of slaves, native people, indentured and the rich slave owners during the Colonial period.  Hagar's musings encourage her audience to relive the times from a different point of view that brings insight into her life and revolutionary times.
